Are there any good places in Zhengzhou to buy English-language books? Novels, non-fiction, even magazines?

I doubt there be any, just get an ipad or something similar n download the books into it...sometimes u'll see book sellers by the road. They sometimes have pirated English books that are worth reading.

It's incredibly rare to find books in English in Zhengzhou... Occasionally you might stumble across classics (Bronte etc.) in some bookstores, but by and large the "ENglish section" will be textbooks for students taking IELTS etc.
I would take a stash with you, look to trade with other foreigners here and resupply when you travel to other cities such as Nanjing, Shanghai and Kunming. They have excellent selections, although they're a bit pricey.
There were a few English book sales at weekends at Huanghe S&T College towards the end of last semester... I think some enterprising students had cottoned on that there is a demand for them. Perhaps it's worth getting in touch with English Club there to see what they can arrange.

Get one of your Chinese friends to get an ebook reader for you from Taobao.com. Cheapest one's are round RMB 500 which have English. Ipad is just too expensive and not worth getting with all the restrictions on international sites.

Do they have regular meetings to practice their English?

I'm asking about physical books in real-world bookshops here...

There is an English language section in the biggest book shop in the centre of town, but like edmason said, lots of it is textbooks for Chinese students. There are a few classics thrown in there though, so if you like Agatha Christie, the Jane Austen, etc there's stuff to keep you going. For a better selection, more modern titles and non-fiction you'll need to either buy online, take them with you or travel to a bigger, more cosmopolitan city like Shanghai or Nanjing. English language books anywhere in China are pretty expensive as they're mostly imported so I'd recommend teaming up with friends and sharing your personal libraries! Check out Alayna's Cafe where I think they have a few books to borrow/ exchange.
