Hi there,
How much prior teaching experience does one normally need to get a job and a visa and a work permit for China?

It is possible to get a teaching job in china without teaching experience or tefl qualifications, though both might help you get a better placement and are no doubt going to help you deliver effective lessons. The main requirements seem to be that you are a native english speak and have a degree.
At least that is what my limited experience looking for a job in china has taught me.

In Henan province, you absolutely need a BA degree or higher, and at least 2 years of teaching experience in order to get a Foreign Expert permit.
That's not to say that you can't be quite liberal on your CV with what's 'teaching experience'...
